Homework policy for syndicate C

Purpose: The assigning of regular homework is seen as beneficial to student achievement because it supports students in the development of good habits and attitudes, self-discipline, responsibility and a love of learning. For this reason the primary purpose of all homework is to encourage and teach good study habits.

Homework is linked into the classroom programme and should be at a level that the student is able to successfully complete independently at home. It should take no more than 20 minutes per night (maximum 60 minutes per week).  If you discover that your child is taking longer than 20 minutes, please see your child's classroom teacher.

This procedure is the maximum amount of time each child is to spend on homework each week.

Each teacher is required to clearly outline their homework expectations within the first two school weeks of the year. This needs to cover such points as:
    1. The importance and rationale of homework;
    2. The consequences of completing/ not completing homework;
    3. Their homework schedule (which must be consistent);
    4. Their expectations of how homework is to completed (e.g. homework book, ruling off, etc);
    5. Their obligation to mark and comment on homework. Any comments made must provide constructive feedback;
    6. That homework assignments have a maximum life of one school week;
    7. No homework will be set over the weekends or term breaks.
This needs to be both sent out as a notice to parents as well as being posted on the school web site.
